Emmy-Winning Creative Director Unveils KRU: Rise of the Ghost City – A Cambodian Urban Fantasy Collaboration with Diwata Komiks
Los Angeles, CA - As announced during How to Bring Your Comic to Life at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Emmy Award-winning Cambodian-American Creative Director Sina San officially unveiled KRU: Rise of the Ghost City, a bold new cinematic and interactive comic series inspired by Cambodian mythology. The project marks an exciting expansion of Diwata Komiks’ lineup, continuing its mission to highlight underrepresented voices and culturally rich stories across the AAPI spectrum.
Set in the present-day multicultural sprawl of Angel City, KRU: Rise of the Ghost City follows five young guardians, each a living talisman, who harness ancestral ink, rhythm-based rituals, and codices rooted in Cambodian mythology to defend their community. As Hollow spirits born of trauma and spiritual decay rise, the KRU must revive ancient traditions to restore balance within themselves and their city.
Sina will bring her award-winning visual storytelling to the page through sweeping environments and an interactive layer, drawing from her background in both game development and visual effects. KRU will also mark her first creative partnership with fellow Emmy Award-winner Mark A.J. Nazal, Chief Creative of Diwata Komiks. The two previously worked together on the acclaimed season of FOX’s Gotham and will reunite in a more personal, creator-owned venture.
“KRU is an opportunity for me to connect more deeply with my Cambodian heritage and community,” said Sina. “It gives me space to explore that culture through the lens of my own lived experience.”
“I’m excited to be working with Sina again after all these years,” according to Mark. “And even more excited about expanding Diwata Komiks into new mythological worlds.”
With its blend of supernatural coming-of-age, Southeast Asian folklore, and street-level spiritual warfare, Sina describes KRU as Charmed meets Ghostbusters, with a sprinkle of Constantine.
More details to come as the project continues development—expect to see first looks during the 2026 convention season.
